Flex pcb design guidelines

  1. Keep the bend radius in mind: The bend radius is the minimum radius the flex PCB can bend without damaging the copper traces. The bend radius should be at least 10 times the thickness of the copper trace.
  2. Avoid sharp corners: Sharp corners can cause stress on the copper traces and lead to cracking or breaking. Use rounded corners instead.
  3. Use proper materials: Choose materials that are suitable for flex PCBs, such as polyimide or polyester.
  4. Minimize the number of layers: The more layers a flex PCB has, the more difficult it is to bend. Try to keep the number of layers to a minimum.
  5. Keep copper traces straight and parallel: Avoid using diagonal or curved traces, as they can cause stress on the board.
  6. Use proper spacing: Keep a safe distance between traces and pads to prevent short circuits.
  7. Avoid placing components near the bend area: Components placed near the bend area can be damaged during bending.
  8. Use stiffeners: Stiffeners can be added to the board to provide additional support and prevent bending in certain areas.
  9. Test the design: Before manufacturing, test the design using simulation software or prototypes to ensure it meets the requirements.
